Victoria, Northern Suburbs Melbourne VIC
Full time
$90,000–$95,000 + Superannuation
Reporting to the Sales Manager, you’ll manage a base of existing customers while developing new business across the transmission and distribution sector — utilities, contractors, distributors, the people who keep the network running.
Day to day, that means:
⚫︎ Building and maintaining relationships with electricity utilities, contractors and key industry stakeholders
⚫︎ Identifying and developing new business within transmission and distribution
⚫︎ Preparing quotations, commercial proposals and tender submissions
⚫︎ Delivering product presentations and technical demonstrations
⚫︎ Providing technical and commercial support throughout the sales process
⚫︎ Working closely with Engineering, Production and Logistics on project delivery
⚫︎ Keeping sales forecasts, customer records and market intelligence up to date
⚫︎ Representing the business at customer meetings, site visits, exhibitions and trade events across Australia and New Zealand
This is where technical sales and sales engineering meet. You won’t just be quoting — you’ll be the person customers call when they need a straight answer.
You don’t need to tick every box below, but this will feel familiar if you’re the right fit:
⚫︎ Experience in technical sales, account management or business development
⚫︎ A background in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial or Power Engineering, or a related technical field
⚫︎ Time spent in electrical infrastructure, utilities, industrial equipment, manufacturing or similar B2B technical environments
⚫︎ Confidence presenting to and negotiating with engineers, project managers and procurement teams
⚫︎ A self-motivated streak — you don’t need someone checking in on you to get things done
⚫︎ A current Australian Driver’s Licence
An engineering qualification helps, but if you’ve built your credibility through the industry itself, that counts just as much.
Beyond the technical background, the hiring team was clear about what matters most day to day:
⚫︎ Asking good questions and actually listening to what a customer needs
⚫︎ Following through on commitments, without needing to be chased
⚫︎ Working independently, while still valuing input from engineering, production and logistics
⚫︎ Communicating with confidence and building trust naturally, in person and over the phone
Product knowledge can be taught. These traits are what the client is really hiring for.
Backgrounds That Tend to Fit:
⚫︎ Electrical Distribution Equipment
⚫︎ Power Utilities
⚫︎ Electrical Engineering
⚫︎ Industrial Automation
⚫︎ Switchgear & Protection Systems
⚫︎ Transformers & Power Equipment
⚫︎ Renewable Energy Infrastructure
⚫︎ Industrial Manufacturing
⚫︎ Capital Equipment
⚫︎ Technical B2B Sales
⚫︎ $90,000–$95,000 + Superannuation (base salary — this role does not carry commission)
⚫︎ Ongoing technical and product training
⚫︎ A long-term career path, not a revolving-door sales seat
⚫︎ A supportive team that backs you with real engineering and logistics support
⚫︎ Exposure to major electricity utilities and infrastructure customers across Australia and New Zealand
Worth knowing before you apply:
interstate travel is a real and regular part of this role. There’s no fixed weekly or monthly schedule, but it happens often, and it’s not optional. If travel isn’t something you can build your life around right now, this probably isn’t the right fit — and that’s fine. But if you’re someone who enjoys getting out from behind a desk and into the field, this is one of the better reasons to travel for work.
Having spoken directly with the hiring team, we see this role sitting between a traditional Sales Representative and a Sales Engineer. The people who thrive here aren’t the ones chasing quick wins — they’re the ones who enjoy earning trust over time, speaking the same language as engineers, and becoming the go-to person a customer calls before they call anyone else.
If you’re coming from electrical distribution, power infrastructure, industrial automation, capital equipment or another technical B2B environment, your experience likely transfers more directly than you’d expect.
While the advertised range is $90,000–$95,000 + Superannuation, our client has been clear: finding the right person matters more than sticking rigidly to the number. For someone with strong, directly relevant experience, there’s room to talk.
If reading this felt less like a job ad and more like a description of the job you actually want, we’d like to hear from you.
Please submit your resume along with a brief cover letter outlining your experience and why this role suits you.
Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
You already know the frustration of selling something you can’t fully explain.
You’re in a technical industry, talking to engineers and procurement teams who know more about the product than you do — and it shows.
This role is different.
Whether you’ve built your career in technical sales, or you’re an engineer, estimator or technical support specialist looking to move toward the commercial side, the instinct that matters here is the same: customers trust people who actually understand what they’re buying.
You’ll be selling specialist electrical switchgear into electricity utilities, contractors and infrastructure organisations across Australia and New Zealand, for an established Australian manufacturer that treats technical credibility as the starting point, not a nice-to-have. Instead of chasing transactions, you’ll spend your time understanding what your customers are actually trying to solve, and working with engineering, production and logistics to get them there.
If you’d rather build a five-year relationship than close a one-off deal, keep reading.
