You may currently be working as a Financial Accountant, Company Accountant, Management Accountant or an experienced all-round Accountant. You may have gained your experience in an Australian business, a Japanese company, a local subsidiary of an overseas group or an accounting practice.

There is no prescribed number of years you must have worked, and CPA or CA qualifications are not essential. We are more interested in whether you can understand the accounts, complete the work accurately and communicate clearly with the people who rely on your information.

You are likely to be a good fit if you:

⚫︎ Can complete month-end accounting tasks with limited supervision
⚫︎ Understand how transactions flow through to the profit and loss statement and balance sheet
⚫︎ Can prepare reconciliations and investigate differences
⚫︎ Have experience using accounting software and Microsoft Excel
⚫︎ Discuss financial matters professionally with corporate stakeholders in Japanese
⚫︎ Work confidently in English with local staff, banks, advisers, auditors and government authorities
⚫︎ Manage competing responsibilities and meet reporting and compliance deadlines
⚫︎ Take ownership of outstanding matters and follow them through to completion
⚫︎ Handle financial and employee information with care and discretion
⚫︎ Have full working rights in Australia

Experience with Australian payroll, BAS, GST, PAYG, FBT, payroll tax, audit, overseas head office reporting or asset accounting would be helpful. However, you do not need to have worked in every area listed.

⚫︎ Use Japanese and English as part of your everyday work
⚫︎ Take ownership of a broad accounting role rather than a narrowly transactional position
⚫︎ Work directly with both Australian and Japanese stakeholders
⚫︎ Gain experience in a specialised area of business asset accounting
⚫︎ Maintain your professional career within a four-day, reduced-hours schedule
⚫︎ Join an established corporate group offering a stable working environment
⚫︎ Work from a conveniently located Melbourne CBD office

A broad role. A short week. A rare combination.

How to Apply

Please submit your English-language resume, includes the following information:

 ⚫︎ Your Australian working rights

 ⚫︎ Your salary expectation

The hiring company is conducting this search confidentially. Further information about the company and its operations will be shared with suitable candidates during the recruitment process.

A well-established Japanese corporate group is seeking a bilingual Accountant to join its Melbourne CBD office and take responsibility for the accounting and finance activities of an Australian group company.

You will communicate in Japanese with the head office and corporate stakeholders in Japan, while using English to work with local employees, business partners, banks, external accountants, auditors and government authorities.

This is a permanent, part-time position working four days per week, generally from 10:00 am to 3:00 or 4:00 pm.

A Day—and Month—in This Role

Most days, you will be at your desk in the Melbourne CBD office working through invoices, payments, bank reconciliations and the general ledger—the everyday work that keeps the accounts accurate and up to date.

Once a month, the pace shifts: you close the books, prepare the profit and loss and balance sheet information, and submit the monthly report to the head office in Japan. Questions may follow, and you will be the person who can explain the figures because you understand both the accounts and the Australian operation behind them.

Payroll also forms part of your role, including Single Touch Payroll, PAYG withholding, superannuation and Victorian payroll tax. BAS, GST and other statutory obligations stay on schedule under your watch, working with external advisers where appropriate.

At year-end, you will prepare supporting schedules for FBT, the company income tax return and the annual audit—not as a specialist tax adviser yourself, but as the person who keeps the company’s records complete, reconciled and ready for its external accountants and auditors.

Alongside the regular accounting cycle, you will support a specialised area of business asset accounting. This involves bringing together financial and operational information, maintaining detailed schedules, reconciling movements and assisting with periodic valuations.

Previous experience in this particular type of asset accounting is not essential. What matters is your ability to understand the accounting, work carefully with underlying data and learn the commercial operation behind the numbers.

You will have genuine ownership of the role, supported by local management, external professional advisers and colleagues in Japan. That is why the ability to work confidently in both Japanese and English is just as important as your technical accounting capability.
